THE POWER TO NEGOTIATE
Autumn had arrived in Germany, and the temperatures were falling fast.
That day the city of Cologne had welcomed us with a light rain that seemed to come to stay.

I found Tony in the cafe, sitting with that smile that never seems to leave his face. How punctual. I thought.

He is a different kind of guy, at first he seems quiet, reserved to himself (someone who does not share), but later, when he is sure that he can communicate with you at the level that he asks for and gives, he is a whirlwind of good ideas, well placed, better explained and with the intention of carrying them out effectively.

Someone to hold tight to.

In this world where attention to a tik tok video has an average of 0.6 seconds, a guy who thinks slowly, deep (we call it reflect) and speaks when he is sure of it, he is a gem.

We greeted each other and sat down and after a brief chat about how we were doing and how the planet and aviation were (Tony is a highly experienced commander, among many other things) the conversation turned into today’s blog.

Negotiating in an interview.

  • Everything comes from a colleague who wanted to change company and from that conversation, I came to many of the conclusions that I maintain today.- Tony began speaking.
  • Many people are currently changing companies, I think that the “old loyalty” is lost by the market itself.
  • -This girl was surprisingly clear about her strengths and weaknesses. He’s already different, I thought, because it’s one of the elements we fight the most in Qrewmentor mentorships, weaknesses and strengths.
  • The case (Tony continued and I tried to memorize as much as possible) is that knowing these characteristics allows you to have more negotiating power in an interview.
  • Bargaining power in an airline interview? Elaborate Tony.
He smiled, as a good coach he knew how to lead the conversation to my questions and therefore to his answers.
  • Do you know any company that has closed due to lack of personnel?
I made memory in my books of companies (Hard landing, No frills, etc) none came to my mind.
  • No, I conceded. I had never thought of it from that perspective.
  • In other words, when you go to an interview you must be flexible and be willing to open your hand to certain “demands” to convince the interviewer that you are the best person for the position.
  • The logic was overwhelming. He would take it from empirical data and then put it in the current market.
He looked at me with a “needs a reaffirmation of this” face.
  • Imagine that you are a cabin manager and instructor and they are looking for someone with these characteristics, your bargaining power is HIGH.
  • Very true. – the coffee was really good in that place.
  • But nevertheless if it is your first or second company and you do not have much experience, your bargaining power is LOW, and that is precisely something that I have seen a lot, people who do not pass their interviews for proposing their own conditions.
  • Like… – I urged him to continue.
  • One of the most common is being reticent to accept a base for being far from home or not being required at first.
I recognize that it is one of the most common restrictions that people who come to Qrewmentor impose.

-Such a demand- he continued- in a first interview, reveals many weaknesses. In a job that is so dynamic and open to geographical mobility, do you have such a need to be at home? If you have to be flexible, aren’t you showing inflexibility at first?
  • If you are right, it also does not follow the definition that you may have initially made about flexibility, adaptability and geographical mobility.
-Exactly, he smiled (he already had me where he wanted in the conversation)
He took his time, drinking some coffee. He looked at me and concluded
  • That’s why you have to be aware of what bargaining power you have in a personal interview.
I decided to include him in my mentorships from then on and have coffee with Tony more often. Until then, find peaceful skies.
