Airline Commander and Crew Mentor, Qrewmentor helps and guides crew members to access jobs with honesty and professionalism.

And what do I say about leadership in an interview?
I have no previous experience (or very little) and I wouldn’t know what to answer…

It is one of the phrases that we often find in Qrewmentor.
Here comes our point of view, because in the end everything is a matter of perspective and how to approach the answer.
We think that each crew member (regardless of his position and experience) leads at some point and follows at another, although it is true that he leads more if his job is more responsible.

Actually being part of a crew:

LEADERS: There are times when your superior is absent, or delegates and you are the person who must decide and lead.
For example, if you are a Cabin Crew and the CABIN MANAGER is taken off standby and arrives later on the plane, by the time he arrives you will have done part of work yourself (cabin preparation, material check, security check, etc) and you will have to update him on what you have done and how in his absence, so that he adapts to the preparation of the flight.
At that time, you lead your superior.

YOU FOLLOW: This is the usual environment of the crew, where the superior (Commander, First officer, Cabin Chief and Cabin crew ) sets the environment and the way of working and those who are lower in the area of responsibility, follow the work in that tone.

COOPERATORS / COLLABORATORS: This is the part that makes the team work well if the tasks are unevenly distributed or if the workload, for whatever reason, is not entirely balanced.
Crew members need to be able to collaborate with each other.

YOU COMMUNICATE: It’s the way collaboration, tone, tasks, and responsibilities work.
Through communication (you have to talk to understand the needs of the team, the tasks and how to solve them).

COMMUNICATION IS THE GLUE OF THE TEAM

HELP: It is a key term for us. When the tasks of the members of a crew become unbalanced, we have to use the help systems, that is, help each other.

How?

ASK: When you can’t cope with your tasks, or the time to carry them out is very little, the best thing to do is ASK FOR HELP.
GIVE: When you have spare time and you think that a member of your crew is tighter with his tasks, YOU OFFER HELP.

In short, that leadership will always be implicit in our operations.
YOU LEAD
YOU FOLLOW
COLLABORATE / COOPERATE COMMUNICATE
ASK FOR HELP
YOU OFFER HELP.

It is a very good mental structure to understand how a crew works, for company tests and for flight work.

Until then, find peaceful skies.
