Whitby Abbey. UK.
The abbey is impressive, one of those places that asks for photos in abundance and that has an aura of peace that allows for deeper conversations.
Sitting on the grass, I was the one leading the conversation on that morning with rare blue skies in England.
- The problem with having very marked goals is that if you are not very stable, they produce crises.
Sarah looked at me with the face of “you better keep going because if you leave me like this in the middle of the concept…”
I understood. - Once you set a very clear objective, such as being a cabin manager at Qatar Airways, 2 things can happen.
That you get it and then question yourself “What now?
Or that you don’t get it and get frustrated. - And what do you propose?
- These things happen a lot to our mentees, they come (to fly for example) and… they have a phase in which they are empty. They have fulfilled the initial dream and do not know how to look for another one or how to be content with the feeling of “okay, this was what was going to make me happy”.
So the proposal is to focus on the process. It is something that makes a person with potential, a person who is worth it and a person who is worth (if he can stand the monotony) a brilliant one. And we see potential and seek to polish it to the maximum. - Let them shine… Right? Smile + nod = Got it.
It is the most complex part, and even more so in such modern and immediate society. Convince them that they will enjoy the process of redesigning their CVs, sending them, preparing interviews, getting to know you well, knowing how to communicate, facing those “fears” of introducing yourself, doing a new training, changing, learning, etc. Those things are what make you grow as a person and as a professional and if instead of being a “GOAL MODE” you are a “PROCESS MODE”, you will enjoy more for the following reasons: - The process never ends (there is always room for improvement)
- The process makes you better, than crossing out goals.
- If you focus on the process, the goals arrive.
- You spend a lot more time on the process than on the goal
(which is, after all, punctual). - You can’t automate goals, but you can automate processes.
- Goals are emotional (based on expectations and
motivation) processes are rational (based on discipline and compound growth). - Understand. Sounds logical. So goals, of course, but remember the ability of aviation to disrupt plans.
For that reason , processes, focus on the path, and you will reach more goals than you had originally planned.
Shall we go into the Abbey? “FOCUS ON THE PROCESS” - Until then, find peaceful skies.
